Content for this course is available on the course Learning Suite webpage.
Course Description and Learning Outcomes
This course serves as an introduction to statistics and probability, emphasizing secondary school-specific curriculum. Topics include principles of counting, probability distributions, density functions, graphical methods, descriptive and inferential statistics.
- Identify and provide examples of basic statistical terminology, such as population,
sample, and random variable. - Construct, read, and interpret data displays and decide the most appropriate procedure
for data analysis. - Summarize data graphically and numerically.
- Identify elements of and distinguish between observational studies and experiments.
- Compute probabilities for simple events.
- Create and interpret by application of a random variable discrete and normal probability distributions.
- Model situations by using experimental or theoretical probabilities.
- Become aware of misconceptions and errors about statistics and probability.
- Make inferences, draw conclusions, and evaluate arguments from a data analysis.
- Explain the need for statistics in understanding real-world processes (i.e., by accounting
for variation in real-world data). - Develop simple activities to reinforce basic statistical topics to middle school and high
school students.
