Stat 301: Statistics and Probability for Secondary Educators

Course Description and Learning Outcomes

This course serves as an introduction to statistics and probability, emphasizing secondary school-specific curriculum. Topics include principles of counting, probability distributions, density functions, graphical methods, descriptive and inferential statistics.

1. Identify and provide examples of basic statistical terminology, such as population,
   sample, and random variable.
2. Construct, read, and interpret data displays and decide the most appropriate procedure
   for data analysis.
3. Summarize data graphically and numerically.
4. Identify elements of and distinguish between observational studies and experiments.
5. Compute probabilities for simple events.
6. Create and interpret by application of a random variable discrete and normal probability distributions.
7. Model situations by using experimental or theoretical probabilities.
8. Become aware of misconceptions and errors about statistics and probability.
9. Make inferences, draw conclusions, and evaluate arguments from a data analysis.
10. Explain the need for statistics in understanding real-world processes (i.e., by accounting
    for variation in real-world data).
11. Develop simple activities to reinforce basic statistical topics to middle school and high
    school students.
